The Salvadoran office in the heart of Long Island

The Consulate of El Salvador in Long Island is located in Brentwood, right in the middle of Suffolk County, one of the areas with the largest concentration of Salvadorans in the entire state of New York. The office, at 151 Alkier Street, serves the huge Salvadoran (cuscatleca) community spread across Brentwood, Central Islip, Bay Shore, Hempstead, Patchogue and the rest of Long Island, a population that in many cases arrived fleeing the civil war during the 1980s and 1990s and that today is an essential part of the island's working and business life.

This consulate was created precisely so that the county's Salvadorans would not have to travel to Manhattan to handle their paperwork. People who work in construction, landscaping, cleaning, restaurants or caregiving often have long days and little room to cross the city, so having a local office in Brentwood, reachable by car or on the Long Island Rail Road line (Brentwood station), is a huge relief. If you are looking for service closer to the city, there is also the consulate of New York in Manhattan.

Frequently asked questions – Consulate of El Salvador in Long Island

What is the difference between the Long Island consulate and the Manhattan one?

They are two different offices in the state of New York. The Long Island one is in Brentwood, in Suffolk County, and serves Salvadorans on the east side of the island without their having to go into the city. The consulate of New York is in Manhattan and is more convenient for those living in the city's five boroughs or in New Jersey. Both offer the same services; choose whichever is closest to your home.

Is it true that I can leave with my DUI (national ID) the same day in Brentwood?

Yes. The Long Island consulate is a same-day DUI (national ID) issuance office. If your application is a renewal and you meet the requirements, you normally receive your new DUI (Documento Único de Identidad) the same day as your appointment, without waiting for it to arrive by mail. For first-time applications or special cases additional time may be required, so it is best to confirm when you book the appointment.

How do I get to the Brentwood consulate by public transportation?

The consulate is at 151 Alkier Street, in Brentwood. The most practical option by public transportation is the Long Island Rail Road train to Brentwood station; from there the office is a few minutes away by taxi, Suffolk County Transit bus or on foot, depending on the spot. If you are driving from the rest of the island, the exits off the Long Island Expressway (I-495) and the Southern State Parkway are the most convenient.

I live in Central Islip or Bay Shore, is this my consulate?

Yes. The Long Island consulate serves Salvadorans throughout Suffolk County and much of Nassau: Central Islip, Bay Shore, Patchogue, Huntington, Hempstead and nearby towns. Since these are among the areas with the largest Salvadoran population in the state, this office was designed precisely to spare you a trip to Manhattan.

Can I register my child born in New York at this consulate?

Yes. If you or the other parent are Salvadoran, you can register the birth of your child born in New York in the Salvadoran civil registry through the Brentwood consulate. The child keeps U.S. citizenship by birth and also obtains Salvadoran nationality, which later allows them to apply for a passport or minor's ID card.

Is the Long Island consulate's phone number a New York number?

Yes. The Brentwood consulate's local number is (631) 273-1355, with the 631 area code that belongs to Suffolk County. To schedule appointments you can also use the national call center 1-888-301-1130 (option 4) or WhatsApp +503 7070-1071. Be wary of numbers with other cities' area codes circulating online.
