Consulate of El Salvador for Raleigh and the Triangle area (NC)
NOTICE: Raleigh does NOT have a Salvadoran consulate. The community of the Triangle area (Raleigh, Durham and Chapel Hill) is served by the Consulate of El Salvador in Charlotte, the only Salvadoran consular office in North Carolina. See the Charlotte consulate.
The Salvadoran community of the Research Triangle
The Triangle area —made up of Raleigh, Durham and Chapel Hill, around the famous Research Triangle Park— has become one of the fastest-growing hubs for the Latino population in the southeastern United States. Alongside the large Mexican majority and a strong Honduran presence, thousands of Salvadorans have put down roots in counties like Wake, Durham and Orange, working in construction, landscaping, cleaning, restaurants and the services that sustain a booming university and technology region. Despite that demographic weight, Raleigh does not have a Salvadoran consulate: there is no office open Monday to Friday that you can walk into directly in the city.
For any consular procedure —passport, DUI (national ID), civil registry, powers of attorney or apostilles— the reference point for all of North Carolina is the Consulate General of El Salvador in Charlotte, in the southwest of the state. For many Triangle families this means a drive of about two and a half hours, so it pays to plan the visit well: book your appointment in advance, combine it with other procedures and, when possible, keep an eye out for the mobile consulates that occasionally bring services closer to the center and east of the state. Below you will find Charlotte's details, the route from Raleigh and the steps to book.
How to get from Raleigh to Charlotte

Frequently asked questions – Salvadoran services in Raleigh
Is there a Salvadoran consulate in Raleigh, North Carolina?
No. Neither Raleigh nor the rest of the Triangle area (Durham and Chapel Hill) has a Salvadoran consulate. The consular office that serves all of North Carolina is the Consulate of El Salvador in Charlotte, at 1520 West Boulevard, Suite C, Charlotte, NC 28208. All in-person procedures are handled there.
How long is the drive from Raleigh to Charlotte to reach the consulate?
The drive from Raleigh to Charlotte is about 2 hours and 30 minutes via I-85 and I-40. It is best to book an early-morning appointment and leave with time to spare so you arrive before your slot; the consulate is open Monday to Friday from 8:00 am to 4:00 pm.
Can I renew my Salvadoran passport or get the DUI ID from Raleigh?
Yes, but the in-person process takes place at the Charlotte consulate, since the passport and the DUI (national ID) require fingerprinting and a photo. Book your appointment at portalcitas.rree.gob.sv selecting United States → Charlotte and bring your documentation up to date (valid DUI, previous passport if renewing, and a birth certificate for minors).
Does the Charlotte consulate hold mobile consulates near Raleigh?
Salvadoran consulates periodically hold mobile outreach events (jornadas móviles) to bring passport and DUI services closer to communities far from the office. Follow the official channels of the Charlotte consulate and check our mobile consulates page to see whether an event is planned in the Raleigh-Durham area or eastern part of the state.
My child was born in North Carolina. Where do I register them as Salvadoran?
Civil registry of a birth in El Salvador's registry is handled at the Charlotte consulate, not at mobile events. Book a civil registry appointment at portalcitas.rree.gob.sv and bring the child's U.S. birth certificate (ideally apostilled) along with the Salvadoran father's or mother's document. This allows the child to obtain a Salvadoran birth certificate and, later, a passport.
Can I complete any Salvadoran procedure without traveling to Charlotte?
Some requests and inquiries can be started online through the Virtual Consulate at portalcitas.rree.gob.sv or by calling the Call Center at 1-888-301-1130. However, procedures with biometric data —passport and DUI— require appearing in person in Charlotte or taking advantage of a mobile consulate when one is announced in the area.
